The soft, warm fur of dogs and cats provides the perfect environment for fleas and ticks. These insects feed on your pet’s blood and can cause health problems ranging from allergic reactions to serious tick-borne illnesses. Both fleas and ticks are more common during the warmer months, but you can take steps to ward them off any time of year.

Pests That Feed on Your Pets

After a walk in the woods, you check yourself for ticks, right? Don't forget about your dog. Tick bites put your dog at risk for Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and a handful of other diseases. They can also cause serious illnesses in cats. If your pet has infected ticks, this puts the rest of the family at risk. If you find a tick, remove it carefully with tweezers, being careful to get all of the head and not to crush it. Ask the vet about tick control.

Overlooking Ticks

A poorly trained dog can pull you over while you’re out for a stroll. According to the CDC, tens of thousands of people end up in the ER every year because of pet-related falls. Many of these falls occur during walks -- either when a person trips over a dog or is pulled or pushed by one. Experts say obedience training is the best way to make sure your pooch doesn’t take you down during the morning walk.

Puppies and kittens aren't like human babies. You can't wait 2 years to start potty training. "With a puppy or kitten you say, "Oh it's just a little mess." But when that puppy is a 70-pound dog, it's not as cute," says Bernadine Cruz, DVM, associate veterinarian at Laguna Hills Animal Hospital in California.

Start getting your pet into the habit of going outside or in a litter box as soon as you come home from the shelter or breeder. "Puppies and kittens like routines, just like human children," Cruz says. "They may not catch on immediately, but they will learn." If you're lucky, your pet will have already picked up a few training tips from mom and dad before coming to live with you.

Don't give your new family member free rein of the house until you've established some training routines. Set up a space where you can confine your pet -- and their messes. For puppies, a crate is ideal. "Often people think of crates as being somewhat cruel, but it can be a secure area for them," Cruz says.

How to Housetrain a Puppy or Kitten

Some dogs bark at things most dogs ignore. Some bark when they're frustrated. Don't yell at your dog when she barks. That may make it worse. Obedience training can help fix frustration barking. If your dog learns to sit before doing something fun like going for a walk, she learns to control her impulses. If your dog is outside all day, changing that may help compulsive barking. But you may need to work with a vet or a trainer.

Behavioral Problems in Dogs Barking All the Time

When dogs are aggressive, it's usually because they're afraid or nervous. If your dog is aggressive, work with a professional trainer or your vet to learn how to teach your dog to rely on you in a healthy way. Never leave an aggressive dog alone with children or unfamiliar adults, even if you think he's not likely to hurt anyone. Muzzle him in public places, if necessary.

Any dog can bite if she feels threatened or nervous. But socializing a dog early teaches her to feel relaxed around people. Gradually expose her to different settings so she will feel safe. Spend lots of time with her so she learns to trust people. Always watch for signs that your dog is uncomfortable and then do what you can to make her feel better. Be especially careful around kids and food.

Behavioral Problems in Dogs Biting

It’s natural for a dog to greet people by jumping up. But that can scare away guests! Don't give your dog attention unless he has his front paws on the ground. Then you can greet him and pet him. Or tell him to sit. Then wait until he does before petting him. It also helps to keep your greetings low key. That helps your dog learn to control his own excitement. Also, make sure you keep your dog from bothering or scaring people who aren't used to him.
