I am sure you have all heard the saying - 'Parrots have more personality than a goldfish'- and while this is very true, there are a few home truths to be known about parrots before rushing out to buy one as a pet.
Parrots are amazing animals, because, like a dog, they have the ability to become a very close companion for you. But it is far easier to train a dog initially than a parrot. Parrots are sensitive creatures that must be looked after and nurtured, and the more love and attention that they are given, the more their individual personalities will shine out.
You would do well to remember that a parrot is actually a wild animal that is meant to be living out in the wild. Therefore they can be dangerous at times and also temperamental. Although it is not possible to send a bird that has been domesticated back into the wild to fend for itself, you will need to make sure your bird is given lots of attention and kept stimulated to avoid it becoming stressed and bored, which can result in it pulling out its feathers.
A word of caution - do not buy a parrot for a small child. Parrots have very sharp beaks that can cause some serious damage if one is not careful. For this reason they need specialised training and handling initially, so that they can be taught not to bite or attack.

Is a Parrot A Good Pet?

It's aquariums for most but for some, its aviaries. Pet lovers tend to relax more and feel calmer when they watch their pets in action and nothing promises more action than watching colorful birds of different species take flight and belt out a cacophony of sounds in birdsongs.
The thing is, people tend to confuse aviaries with bird cages, thinking that they're one and the same thing. For the clueless and for those who want to know the difference between each, aviaries are large enclosures for confining birds but have larger living spaces than cages. Aviaries also allow birds more space to fly and are usually designed to mimic a bird's natural habitat. Because these cages allow birds to fly, they are sometimes referred to as flight cages.Plus, aviaries will also allow you to house a number of bird species.
Bird cages on the other hand, are cages designed to house birds as pets. They are often considered too small to house more than two complimenting species at a time and are more often than not, used more for home décor without live birds in it, unlike aviaries. Cages are also too small for birds to have any flying space and choosing cages also depends on the size and species of birds you want to get.

Cage Vs Aviaries - Which One Should You Choose?

What should I look for in a birdseed for my pet bird? The ultimate pet bird diet should contain more variety than just seeds or pellets. An all seed diet can cause malnutrition in your bird or an unbalanced ratio of nutrients which can develop into other types of illnesses. All birds need a diverse and nutritious diet including bird seed, along with fruits and vegetables. Those ingredients will help them have healthy feathers and skin, avoid infections and help them live a long life. Birds in the wild don't just eat the seeds. They eat nuts, flowers, grasses, insects, worms and fruit from trees.
The foundation of a good birdseed for your pet bird is to first offer the type of seed that your particular breed needs. There are many specialized (by breed) foundation diets commercially. Along with birdseed, fruits and vegetables should be offered as a daily snack. Choose colorful and dark green vegetables (no avocados) which are more nutrient dense. The more color and variety the better. Some birds are hard to please so you may want to try chopping or mashing the treat to see which they prefer.
